Crowd Management

Anticipate, Assess, Plan, Practice

One of the most significant risks we face when we organize, work, or attend an event is other people.  More specifically, when people form a crowd.  Some people may be familiar with the term “Crowd Control” – this is not something we aim to do at Live Events.  Crowd Control is more commonly used by Law Enforcement as a tool to control public order; in the event world, it is something that is done to regain control when something goes wrong.

Crowd Management is about the prevention or mitigation of hazards that might be reasonably foreseeable in the circumstances of your event.  Crowd Management is about the safe movement of people; it is about effective communication to 2,000 of your closest friends whom you have only just met. Crowd Management is about making your attendees and teams safer so that they can all focus on the event itself and the experiences they came to enjoy.

It is about predicting and understanding potential behavior and what you can do to prevent, encourage or guide people, mitigating the risks during normal operations and emergency situations.

For Everyone

If you work or attend anywhere that people gather, you are exposed to risks caused by crowds. To mitigate those risks on a personal level, you need to understand a) what risks you are potentially being exposed to and b) what is within your control to mitigate those risks.
Think of this course like putting on a seatbelt before driving your vehicle. It may not prevent others from causing hazards, but it will more often than not reduce the severity of the hazard you experience.

For People on the Front Line

If you work in close proximity to crowds, then this course is for you. We expand beyond the hazard awareness of the first course and examine how to anticipate common situations and the appropriate responses. Imagine if you were thirty feet in the air: the hazard awareness course is the equivalent of stopping you safely once you have "fallen." This course aims to reduce the chance of you "falling" in the first place.

For Supervisors

As a supervisor or leader you already understand your responsibility for the safety of your team. This course is designed to give you the knowledge and tools you need for when the crowd starts to gather and it's no longer just about building your event.

For Professionals

If your job involves organizing or planning events, managing crowds or venues, then this is course for you. Effective Crowd Management begins before the crowd ever arrives. Simply put: you need to be able to anticipate, assess, plan, practice, and adapt.
